Old Town Coleman's "Ready to Ship"
Coleman Model 242
Single Mantle Lantern
Born in March of 1933
Condition: Excellent
She has been on the planet for 91 years and she's still rockin it.
I didn't have the highest hopes for this old 242 as it had an old, solid and very scaly layer of crud everywhere, she was froze up and it was missing the globe. I included one photo to show the condition of the nickel before it was cleaned.
That brilliant shine from perfect nickel did not come back. But it does shine and looks awesome for 91 years. Please look closely at the photos, there is one there that is a close-up showing nickel condition. All of the crud was successfully removed from the frame and ventilator without issue. Please note that there is one dart-tip sized ding in the fount and it can easily be seen in the photos. There are a few yellow brassy spots but are not bad. Ventilator is in really nice condition with a little rust around the top but no chips or dents.
I tore it down and rebuilt it, of course. The tip cleaner was completely locked up from varnish. I heated it up well a few times to free it up. There is still a stiff resistance to turning the lever, but not bad.
After a few days of soaking I was able to get the NRV (check valve) out without damaging it. I was prepared to replace the pip with a repop rubber one, but found the original cork one to be really soft. So I flipped it around and put it back in and it seals perfectly. The two photos of this lantern burning were taken one hour apart, showing that was no loss of pressure during that time. I was pleasantly surprised.
This lantern will ship with my last Fred Kuntz mica globe.
I didn't have the heart to put a modern replacement generator in it, so I found an old NOS one still in the original box and used it. I will ship the empty box and the generator that was with the lantern when I got it. The valve stem packing and filler cap gasket were replaced with new.
The "3" on the left side of the fount is really hard to locate.
You'd almost need to find one still in the box to better the condition of this one. She's not perfect, but she is a very clean example of the awesome 242.
Asking price is $400.00, plus shipping and insurance.
