Coleman Model L427

Double Mantle Quick Lite Lantern

Born in May of 1927

Condition: Very Good

* Afterwards, I noticed that the pump was sticking out about an inch for the pictures. Just an oversight...

She has a few bumps and bruises but looks really, really nice.

Please review the photos of the area directly under the filler cap. That is the worst part of the fount with plenty of small dings and scratches. I have no idea how this all got there--rather odd marks for a lantern. There are also a few dart-sized dings on the side of the fount but the nickel did shine back up nicely.

I complained on Facebook that I had found a neoprene pump cup on this lantern. Later, I found out why. The pump cup, and the pump itself, were worn out. Yes, really, like I have never seen. The reason the neoprene cup was on it is because the bottom 1/4" or so of the pump shaft threads were gone. There weren't enough threads left to get a bite with a leather cup attached, so they used the thinner rubber one. That shaft was replaced with a period correct one.

Additionally, I found that the pump cap was so worn that the return spring could actually poke through and quit working. As seen in the photos, I installed a small washer on the inside to keep it in place. I had already replaced the pump shaft so I wanted to keep the cap original.

The original mica globe has a few broken panels, and one of the pins (bottom) that keep it round and together has been lost. I'm sure you could contact Rob Butts for replacements. As you can see, a burning lantern with an old mica globe has "that" look to it.

The ventilator is in pretty good condition, although some of the shine has been lost. It is solid with a bit of chipping.

I cleaned and reused the R55 generator that was on it when received; the valve stem packing and cap gasket were replaced. Original check valve cleaned and retained also. A previous repair person used graphite tape for the valve stem packing, which was rather unusual to find.

Not a perfect L427, but certainly one worth adding to your collection. She's almost 98 years old and still very capable of producing light for many years to come.
